Almshouses are a charitable form of self sufficient, low cost community housing that is held in trust for local people in housing need.
They are managed and run by almshouse charities made up of local volunteers.
Wantage has Three sets of Almshouses, in Eagles Close, Mill Street and Stiles Court.
The first two are managed by the Wantage Townland Governors, and Stiles Court has its’ own Charity.
The Wantage Townland Governors have existed as a Charitable Body since at least the reign of King Henry the Sixth.
In 1597 Queen Elizabeth confirmed them in their office and in possession of their Trust Properties.
Their Duties were defined by an Act of Parliament which laid down that their number was to be twelve.
